Bea kept dreaming of caves and seals, then waking up to check the time. When her alarm went at five o’clock she jumped out of bed and pulled on trousers and a T-shirt. Then she took a torch from her drawer. There was still an hour or two till sunrise and she would need the light to see her way along the shore.

Tiptoeing downstairs, she grabbed her raincoat and raced to the orchard. She climbed the plum tree that grew next to the palace wall, before jumping to the other side. Then she hurried down the hill into Savara.
